Mary and I were married at the Granada Movie Grill, a revamped 1950's movie theater. |

Our tourgroup was booked on Champion Air (formerly ValueJet, I think). One of
the 727's engines failed run-up tests on the runway. Each time we returned to
the gate for maintenance. We finally got off the ground a few hours later,
but climbed very poorly. A coupla thousand feet up the pilot executed a
brutal 180 (the stall warning blipped on twice during the turn), easily the
most aggresive maneuver I've ever felt in Big Iron. It was safe, just
intense.
Champion flew a spare jet down from Minnesota and we took off without further delay, arriving in Cancun about 7 hours late. |

| Monday, 8 Feb 1999 Our hotel, The Gran Caribbe Real, was lovely and a pleasant experience after the flight goofs. We played in the surf and sat in the pool's swim-up bar. I preferred Modelo and Mary drank pina coladas. I got a small patch of sunburn on my shoulder. We rented a wetbike and wiped out a few times, losing Mary's sunglasses. We boarded the cheap and everpresent buses to go to a local mall in search of shades. | |

We rode the bus out to Chichen Itza ('chicken pizza'), two hours trip. It was unmercifully hot, and as it was in the quasi-jungle there was no cooling wind unless you were atop a structure. One of my life goals was to see some Mayan ruins, and specifically to climb the main pyramid of Chichen Itza. I did it but was scared (acrophobia like a big dog). The stairs were so steep I'm surprised no one fell down while we were there. Mary was like some kind of mountain goat, frollicking about. | |
| Wednesday, 10 Feb 1999 We bought some snorkel masks (or "snorking" masks as one brochure put it). We bobbed around in the surf and found nifty little shells and coral bits. Nifty! We both decided we liked snorking. Mary began to have a reaction to some of the sunscreen I brought. | |
| Thursday, 11 Feb 1999 Took the bus to downtown Cancun, where it appears the locals live. I got a decent exchange rate through an ATM, though I had to try a couple before one could connect with BancOne. | |
| Friday, 12 Feb 1999 Mary's rash from the lotion was itching pretty bad. We went to Xcaret to check out the snorking and dolphin festivities. Mary swam with the dolphins, which was something she'd really wanted to do. It was so incredibly lovely there I was miffed I forgot my digicam that day... Late in the day a storm started to blow in. The wind was so strong Mary report whitecaps in her drink (no joke). | |
| Saturday, 13 Feb 1999 Full-blown storm. Rain and wicked wind. Mary and I slept late and packed for departure the next day. The wind was so strong the incredible massive Mexican flag near our hotel stood out straight. To give you an idea of the size of this monster, compare the 5-story buildings on its left across the street. The base of the flagpole was the single thickest pole structure I've ever seen. | |
| Sunday, 14 Feb 1999 We flew back Sunday. I smoked a Cuban cigar there in the airport (Belinda). Try that in an American airport! We were glad to be back, and felt we had a wonderful time. We'll do something like it again next winter! | |
