One of my goals in life is to have a doctorate by the time I turn 40 (Feb 1, 2006). I started a program in Transatlantic History at UTA in Fall 1999.

Research

I've got a few loose ideas I'd like to toss around the first year, and see if any of them have promise:

early members of Black fraternal orders (Prince Hall affiliated Masons, Knights of Tabor) as forerunners to Pan-Africanism.
Mutation of esoteric/Masonic tradition after contact with the new world, particularly in Black Masonry (and, no, I'm not a Mason or Black for that matter.)
Evolution of Old World culinary practice in New World settings (adaptation to indigenous materials, etc)
Sociological function of esoteric doctrines, science, or practice in Discovery or colonization
Adaptation of OW water delivery systems and civic/hydraulic theory to NW topology.
transatlantic transportation and logistics
Effect of transatlantic communications (telegraph, radio) on intellectual/cultural matters.
