The peaks and hive-like dome the stooping haunted readers
Go up and down the alleys, tap the cells of knowledge--
Honey and wax, the accumulation of years--
Some on commission, some for the love of learning,
Some because they have nothing better to do
Or because they hope these walls of books will deaden
The drumming of the demon in their ears.

graduate work

I finished a Master's in History at UTA Fall 1998.

I have some of my work preserved here for your use, edification or amusement (as the case may be). I do this because I believe that reading the work of one's peers can be a useful tool in constructing an education. I am aware, however, that there may be younger or lazier students out there who may wish to adapt this work to their own ends. I have some caveats for those students:

  1. My work is not particularly good or original. You can likely do better on your own.
  2. You can't get an education without doing the process (doing your own work in this case)
  3. Your instructors can find this page as easily as you did

These files are generally in both WP5.1 or Word and .txt formats. I've also included in the WP archives a macro that I wrote to convert the documents to ASCII while retaining the annotation (something WP5.1 will not naturally do, and you know scholarly work is worthless without annotation). You can download a zip archive that contains the .wpm, text source, and README.

Most of the works below are brief (pruned down to a couple of hundred words) reactions/reviews/precis of various histories or historical sources. You can eyeball them in .txt format, or pull down the .zip file which contains both the .txt version and the original WP5.1 source, with embedded graphics, etc. Some of the Word versions have extraneous material in them where the WP comments did not convert invisibly.

It is embarrassing at times to put up one's earlier work (typos, muddled thinking, flowery syntax) but I think I should do it anyway. The net has given so much to me, and I would like to give a little back. If you refer to any of this in your own work, please cite me and give the url to my homepage. Thanks!
