My favorite OTR series

These are my favorite shows, in order (changes with my mood!) You may also want to eyeball the Essential OTR page for more ideas.

  1. CBS Radio Mystery Theater - drama - although generally not considered OTR by purists, it's still my first radio love. Plus there is about 1300 hours of shows extant. Woo-hoo!

  2. Broadway is my Beat. Not for the faint of heart, this gritty show is dark, depressing, gothic. If you are tired of wise-cracking detectives, happy endings, and simplistic dialog, then BIMB is the antidote. Lock up the whiskey bottles before you pop in the CD!

  3. Dragnet. - Just the facts, Ma'am. Actually, it's a lot more than facts. Friday and his partner enjoy a professional but friendly relationship, and we get nice peeks behind the gruff exteriors.

The writing is interesting; unlike other detective genres, there are plenty of details that don't necessarily lead anywhere. It's not a red herring, but the way that real investigations go.

  4. Gunsmoke - Although I am not a fan of westerns, Gunsmoke has good scripts, and good acting (particularly William Conrad). Gunsmoke has been described as "relentlessly adult" in style and content.

  5. Candy Matson - detective - A tough female detective, who takes no guff. A pre-feminist hero? Good stuff.

  6. Damon Runyan - drama - wiseguys and street drama. I don't know what it is about the characters that struggle to express themselves, but it's great fun. Really funny, and decent plots.

  7. Yours Truly Johhny Dollar - detective - JD is a freelance insurance investigator. The series has a clever gimmick: the stories are organized around his ("action-packed") expense account. Nicely written, with enough beautiful dames, crooked thugs, and guns to keep it real. :-)

  8. Mercury Theater and other Orson Wells work - drama - astounding level of quality on these shows. Check out the Julius Caesar rehearsal for a behind-the-scenes look at OW's personality as a director.

  9. Nero Wolfe - detective - the portly detective just about has to be forced to work on cases. He's constantly goaded by his assistant.
