My incoherent Rants of the Week®

"We are innocent beings. . . we can love with integrity."

This is where I rant and slaver about whatever bug's up my bum. It's all first-draft quality so don't expect too much (except typoes and self-contradiction).

Martin Luther King, jr revisited via the net

I was pondering <ponder, ponder> the nature of e-mail the other day. Ever notice how MLK's dream may be coming true in an ASCII sort of way? Our correspondents have to judge us on the content of our character[s]...

Hippies

I've been accused of possessing the hippie nature, but I assure you this is not true. I can't stand polyester...

Guns and Cigars

They're both Good. I recommend double coronas or churchills when firing handguns, as the added length keeps the smoke out of your face. I prefer robustos when nestled up against the butt of an AK. The SKS, with its slim lines and easy dignity, demands a cigar of equal strange beauty; a lonsdale seems right.

Speaking of guns, I'm pretty handy with'em. I know it's weird that I'm a gun-loving peacenik. Maybe I should make a page called "The Fully-Armed Pacifist". I can't really explain this dichotomy in me, but maybe I'll try later. I do know that I'm good at both resolving disputes and at defensive shooting (I recently scored 214/250 in my Texas Concealed Carry practicum, second in the class).

Current selections

  • My sidearm of choice is the Beretta 92F. It's large but feels right in my hand. Right now it holds 15+1 Cor-bons for outside carry, and 10+1 (6 Glaser and 5 Cor-Bons) for indoors. I use Uncle Mike's holsters, a pancake and vertical shoulder.
  • North American Arms .22 LR 1 1/8" barrel mini-revolver. It holds five rounds; I bought CCI Stingers for it.
  • 1954 Soviet-proofed SKS, gorgeous laminated stock.
  • Mossberg Model 500, 26" 20ga. 5+1 Winchester 2 3/4" #6 lead shot.

Politics

As a wise person pointed out, Poli=many and tics=blood-sucking parasites. You do the math.
I think the two party system and the resulting partisan chauvinism are thoroughly abhorrent. Quack like a duck. Good boy.

And why is it that people who are really, really concerned about politics (any party) are invariably obsessive assholes?

Religion

[Note: I was brought up a fundamentalist.]

I used to have one rule about door-to-door evangelists, regardless of their sect: If they knew more about their religion than I knew about their religion they could stay. If I know more than them about their own religion they had to go. I never had one stay. I find it sad that certain denominations send out it's least-prepared lusers to the world as missionaries.

And while I'm ranting that subject, I really destest the hubris of those churches who send missionaries all over the world to covert them. Smacks of not-so-latent racism. Want to help people? Feed someone in your own fscking neighborhood. fscking busybody hypocrites. Social luddites. Undereducated bullies.

Religion is a private matter, dig? As in between you and your god [if any]". What could possibly be more personal and subjective than one's relationship with one's maker [if any]? Why is this so hard to understand?

What causes fundie xtians, self-professed followers of a demonstratably tolerant and gentle man, to hate so much?

The only thing wrong with xtianity, is, indeed, the xtians themselves. (was it Nietzsche or Marx that said that?)

The SBC Boycott of Disney was expected, and makes the xtians look like hateful, spiteful, mean-spirited bastards. And I'm sure that's not the case. Message to fundamentalist Christians in general and SBs in particular: Mind your own business and be more Christlike! There are plenty of sideshow revival frauds, faith-healing trickers and televangelist scams "logs" to remove from your own eyes.

Black Churches

I really don't think there's a conspiracy out to burn churches; looks more like it's happening on a personal level. But, whatever the reason, I think the deacons of the church should take turns guarding the churches with shotguns. Would likely reduce the arson rate. Same thing for synagogues.

Diana and the photobastards in Paris

It was just a matter of time. All it will take to solve this problem is an instance of the bodyguard hanging out the sunroof with a 12 gauge auto, killing a few of the stalking bastards.
Anyone hovering over MY house with a helicopter, or in MY face when my family's grieving is taking their chances. Eat lead, you mercenary, worthless parasites. Burn in hell.

Women

I don't understand them. [All my ex-girlfriends reel back from shock]. But then again who warned us against taking apart the ones we love to see what makes them tick?

I think that women will continue to benefit from casting off social programming. Far too many women have been programmed to be docile, submissive and faux-stupid waiting for a White Knight husband. Equality in a relationship is unlikely if one party is taught to be submissive.

We need to teach our daughters that it is ok to:

  • be happy in their bodies.
Women are seriously beautiful and don't need to starve or carve themselves to be ok. Vanity surgery is an abomination against the body-temple.
  • have their own opinions, and be challenged by those who disagree.
Boys do so make passes at girls who wear glasses.
  • acknowledge and act on their human/sexual needs .
As long as we brainwash our daughters that good girls don't have sex (and even if they do, they sure aren't allowed to enjoy it) we will have the predator/prey game. And many times the prey will get seriously injured. The answer: make sure that no really means no in every circumstance, and then teach our sons that same truth.
  • they have worth as people, quite independent of their looks, bra size, weight, marital/maternal status.

Men

I hope the next ten years see a real growth in mens' awareness and health. I think it's sick that men die years earlier, get killed in wars, and are 7 times more likely to be violently attacked than the general population. Also, if you include prison stats, rape is predominately a male issue. There men are raped 8-to-1 compared to women. This does not make light of violence to women, but rather points to the fact that we, as a culture, don't give a damn what happens to men. When was the last time you heard a newscaster say: "33 people were killed in a bus explosion, including 15 men." It just doesn't happen. And if you're non-white, non-xtian, or non-het you can just give up any chance for public interest in your situation. [They get more coverage, perhaps (percentage-wise), but very little interest in the sense of people wanting to get involved in a solution.] This is very, very wrong. [he dismounts the soapbox]

We need to teach our sons to:

  • cast off the old behaviors of violence and of bodyguard.
  • learn to have other real relationships other than the one with their significant other.
Building friendships is critical but entails a certain amount of risk. Are we ready to take that risk?
  • constructively wield the inherent strength and potential of the male body.
Our abilities and power need to be channeled to benefit ourselves and others around us. In the absence of guidance, our sons turn on themselves, on each other, on society in general.
  • retain a healthy amazement with life.
Like the Vikings said, "Do not trust with a sword he who cannot dance." Should we send out 'virgins with rifles' to take life before they have learned to cherish it? Is war an authentic act for those who do not understand what they defend?

Intolerance

Life is far too short, too ephemeral. If we can find love anywhere, with anyone, then that is Good. Why do we react so violently to those who find love in ways unfamiliar to us?

UPS, strikes in general

Strikes to me say "Hi. I'm not too interested in keeping my job." I laugh when strikers' jobs are snatched by others. That's how it works in a free society.

If the UPS workers want to develop more sympathy for their position they might be better off lobbying for the right to display their status (full/part time) and average hours worked on a nametag. When customers started seeing their ass-busting UPS person is clocking 50 hours/week as a part-timer, I figure the customers would start barking. And that's how change gets made. The customer drives change. Nobody cares about the worker. That's how capitalism works; pay the worker less than s/he's worth.

Spammers

Geez louise. If you want to get spam (UCE), post to a newsgroup, or make a webpage, or register a domain. Man.

Luckily, you can filter out most of what you dun want to see. My own killfiles are doing a bang-up job, killing many posts daily. Good stuff. procmail is highly recommended.

Airlines

The passengers that got splattered in airline turbulence were taking their chances and deserved about what they got. An airplane is a rolling miracle, and people should wear the dingdang seatbelts when flying. Hel-lo-o-o-o... didn't anyone learn anything from the Hawaiian plane that lost a side in flight?

Having been all grouchy and saying that stuff, I'll add that I do feel sorry for the crew. They had no choice but to be unbelted (excepting cabin crew.)

The Law

I'm no student of the law (even though I've broken a few when I was younger) but in my view a person shouldn't be tried for murder unless they murdered someone. Silly me. I mean, telling your boyfriend to murder someone isn't the same as pulling the trigger. If it were, all the whackos that call into talkshows would be in jail.
BTW, I think Zamora is pretty hot, even if she is a nutcase.
