Finding Songs

If you only know a few words

If you want to find a song but all you know about it is a lyric fragment (like goin' back to Cali), do a phrase search in a search engine. In
AltaVista you might search for the string "back to cali" (quotes intentional, as they delimit a phrase). I left out the word goin' because you don't know how it's really spelled in the lyrics. Try to avoid searching on ambiguous, non-standard, or punctuated keywords, because you don't know how they'll be spelled and you could waste a lot of time.

If you know the artist and a few words

If you know the artist, search on that info, too: +cool +"back to cali"
In our Altavista example, the plus (+) signs mean the keyword is required, and the quotes mean the delimited text is a phrase. You don't have to use AltaVista, but do dig a little and pick an engine that allows you to do complex searches.

You might also search on [artist] discography to find a list of all their albums and songs, or [artist] lyrics] to find lyric sites.

Getting the song

Once you know the artist and the title you can go get a copy of the song, or the CD it's on. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
