You are not required to be familiar with these resources, but they may help you find more information on XML topics which interest you. Please report dead links to mouse.browser@mousetrap.net. Newsgroups are forums oriented around a particular subject. You can read the news via web interface at deja/google, but your best longterm bet is to use your ISPs news server and use some kind of freeware news client:

Remember, your login is based on your machine's hostname, not on any other number.
~/[initials] refers to the subdirectory under your homedir, named after your initials. Everything except for .dotfiles will be stored in your ~/[initials] directory.
