solaris8 - Day 7

Goals

In this session you will:
  • hack root on your box
  • install Solaris 8

hack root

The object of the game is to get you back into your box after the root password has been lost/forgotten/changed.
  1. have your neighbor change the root pass and log out
  2. use your Installation or Software 1 of 2 CDs to boot to single user mode on the CD: boot cdrom -s or b -s depending on your architecture. Sparc is a bit easier here because the BootPROM gives you ample time to work.
  3. mount your / partition
  4. edit your /etc/shadow file
  5. unmount your / partition
  6. remove the CD, reboot the box,
  7. remember to set a new root pass immediately

Install

Install labs are casual and move at the machine's pace. Relax and enjoy the change.

  • let the default install drive this install; I want you to get comfortable with the flow of events. You will extert control over the second install.
