Massively Parallel / distributed computingTeam Mousetrap currently donates its spare CPU cycles to SETI@home. You can follow our progress.[since the successful termination of the distributed.net rc5 project, mousetrap has turned it's resources toward set, above] Project Bovine RC5-64What does your computer do when you're not looking? Your idle CPU cycles are basically wasted on a pretty screen saver of flying toasters, more than likely. But you can do something interesting and fun by donating those spare CPU cycles to a distributed computing project and become part of the most powerful computer in the world.
When this server is idling (ie, has nothing else going on) it donates those idle CPU cycles to a global mathematical challenge to crack a 64-bit RSA MD5 key. You can check on Team Mousetrap's contribution ("esoterica") to this project. Don't have a fancy unix server that can donate spare cycles? That's cool: put your Win95 box to work! It's fun, costs nothing, and there's even a tiny bit of prize money just to sweeten the deal.
SETI@homeThe SETI@home project uses spare CPU cycles to scan radio telescope signals for evidence of life on other planets. You can view my progress on this project.
