Team Mousetrap runs Debian Linux boxen. Power to the people.

bandwidth and mousetrap.net

Mousetrap.net is no longer under strict bandwidth limitations, but in the spirit of conserving the commons, the following configuration is still valid:

  • turned on .html compression (mod_gzip) in apache. This greatly reduces bandwidth on text and html pages.
  • started aggressively blocking spam at the server.
  • set maximum incoming message size at 1MB.
  • run all LAN HTTP traffic through privoxy to strip out ad banners and other unnecessary content

Stuff you can do:

  • telnet: use SSH instead, with compression turned on. SSH is much better from a security standpoint anyhow. putty is a great tool for doing SSH from windoze machines. Telnet will go away.
  • POP3/IMAP: check your mail at a sane interval.
  • FTP: do not needlessly move stuff to/from the servers.
  • FTP: do not store your personal or business backups on the servers.
  • HTTP: minimize the size of your graphics, as they are not compressed by apache.
  • HTTP: do not post binary files for download. I store my downloadable stuff offsite on free servers.

Thanks for your help!
