OTRnap news
otrnap01.mousetrap.net is permanently offline. See the newspage for details.
News20030202: I just uninstalled the opennap server off mousetrap.net for reasons discussed below. It has been my pleasure to host this service for the past year or so (1.5 years? I don't remember). At the time I dropped the server there were over 650 registered users, and I thank each one of them. You folks were extremely helpful in getting the project up from an idea, to workable service, to linked service, to active community. OTR people are simply the best. But you already knew that... It is my hope that someone with free bandwidth will be able to pick it up and run with it. I will read alt.radio.oldtime concerning that line of thought; maybe we can find a volunteer. One outside the US might be a smart legal move. Something to think about. Note that I have had no contact with the admin of otrnap.cyberhomestead.com; it is possible that his server may be up. I don't know. 20030126: No word from cyberhomestead. I've turned off the application form, and am leaning heavily toward stopping the service. I haven't even run a client on the network since mid-December. I'm going to start a discussion about the topic in alt.radio.oldtime, if anyone's interested. 20030124: Still can't link with cyberhomestead.com. I should know in a few days if I can run OTRnap here. This certainly doesn't help; looks like the courts may be on the RIAA's side re: p2p networks. Although we don't trade copyright stuff on this network, it's still worrisome. 20030123: moved to the new network; don't know if I will be able to run OTRnap here. Can't link with otrnap.cyberhomestead.com at the moment, but maybe that's because of the new setup. 20030112: I will be moving, which will mean the end of my current DSL feed. I do not know if I will be able to continue to run the main OTRnap server at my new place. I will keep you informed. 20021219: Monster problems all over my network, though luckily the OTRnap01 server was unaffected. Two of my NT workstations boxes died and had to be replaced with new hardware on Win2000; it'll be a while before I get my clients back online and sharing personally. Not that there's much bandwidth left after the OTRnap servers are done with it... And of course the Sparc/Solaris boxes keep going... and going... and going... 20021212: I have been rewriting some of the server's boot scripts for opennap, so the otrnap01 server may have been intermittently unavailable. 20021114: Servers are relinked. I'll start adding in new users over the next couple of days. 20021104: Ok, both admins are working on the issue now. New registrations will be queued up until the servers can relink. 20021027: I haven't been able to reach the admin of the second OTRnap server to get the linking problem fixed. For technical reasons I will not be able to add in any new users until we can link the servers again. 20021024: otrnap01.mousetrap.net has changed IPs; those of you using the hostname instead of IP will be unaffected. Those of you using the IP will need to use the new IP listed in the server info page, or start using the hostname (a better all-around method). I had to move the opennap server over, as it was killing my production box. In the long run this should be a step forward. In the short run there may be glitches as I figure out the new version (.44) and new distribution package. The two servers are not linked back up yet, for example, and I'm not sure why not. Bear with me. 20020330: more DSL flakiness. I'm making some TCP/IP changes on the main server on my network that may increase stability at the cost of some slight decrease in speed. From your point of view it may look faster since the feed will be more stable. 20020325: massive DSL outage on otrnap01.mousetrap.net. DSL techs came out and made some physical changes that may make my feed more stable. I hope so. 20020317: the network has grown quite a bit (well over 500 users) and the mousetrap server is starting to creak a bit under the load. You may find better response by attaching to the linked cyberhomestead server when mousetrap is slow. OTRnap is safe for the foreseeable future... I have also been playing more with gnutella-technology p2p networks, which do not require a centralized server. My favorite client for this is GNUcleus, an open source client, though there are many others available on many platforms. 20020313: note that the second server has changed IPs; if you have had trouble connecting by IP, either use the hostname (otrnap.cyber...) or the new IP below.
